This film was awesome! I took my kids (niece and nephew) to see it at the drive-in. What a great story about a shy teenager named Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third. The son of the Viking Chief, Stoick who runs their mythical tribe on the island of Berk. Hiccup has been trying his whole life to prove that he has what it takes to follow in his tribes traditions of slaying Dragons. He works as an apprentice to a blacksmith. In his free time he invents a bolas cannon, that will allow him to capture and kill a dragon. Without permission he uses it one night during a dragon raid with promising yet disastrous results. He believes he hit a Night Fury, a dragon so rare no one knows what it looks like because no person has ever seen one. Hiccup goes in search of his prey. In his amazement he finds the dragon trapped. His cannon had worked! He pulls his knife for the kill, but can't muster up the rage needed to execute. Instead he lets the dragon loose and watches as it struggles to fly away. Hiccup decides he is going to befriend the dragon, naming it toothless. Then he tries to help mend toothless's tail that had been damaged during its crash landing after its capture. While Hiccup is trying to help his new friend, his dad enrolled him in dragon combat training, with the other kids in the village. His growing knowledge of toothless helps him progress to the number 1 student of the class. He is able to control every dragon they throw at him. Earning him the honor of getting to fight and kill a dragon at graduation in front of the whole village! Astrid, a girl who's jealousy of Hiccups accomplishments gets the best of her, follows him into the woods. She finds him with toothless and tries to run away. Hiccup and toothless chase and catch her. They take her on a ride and eventually fly into the dragons nest, where they find that the dragons are taking all the food they steel to feed the queen dragon, who will eat them if they don't. Upon their return Astrid wants to tell the tribe about the nest, but Hiccup convinces her to keep quiet for now! He then tries to show the village that dragons aren't all bad, by putting down his weapons and refusing to fight at graduation. Before he could prove his point his Dad stopped the fight. Startling the dragon it attacks Hiccup. Toothless hears Hiccups scream and comes to the rescue. With no regard to himself he saves Hiccup but gets captured in the process. The tribe uses Toothless to lead them to the nest and a great battle ensues. During and after the battle Hiccup gets his chance at gaining the tribe's acceptance. The end is a bunch of feel good moments, that is not surprising at all. Definitely a great family film, with some very funny scenes, that I will have to purchase when it comes out on DVD!
